This lecture is presented in partnership with the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory
Roland Bürgmann received his Vordiplom at the Universität Tübingen in Germany, his M.S. at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and his Ph.D. in geological sciences at Stanford University, in 1993. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geology at UC Davis and has been on the faculty in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at UC Berkeley, since 1998. His research interests are in active tectonics, crustal deformation and lithosphere rheology. His research group uses space geodetic methods to constrain crustal deformation around active faults, volcanoes, subsiding basins, and landslides. Utilizing such measurements and mechanical models can provide better understanding the underlying deformation processes. Among other service, Bürgmann is currently chair of the National Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council of the U.S. Geological Survey and is a member of NASA’s Earth Science Advisory Committee.
