Science at Cal seeks a new Events & Marketing Specialist! 

 

Science at Cal supports the advancement of the public’s understanding of science by creating opportunities for the UC Berkeley Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research community to share the wonder, excitement and relevance of their research with public audiences. Accessibility, inclusiveness, creativity and innovation are hallmarks of Science at Cal events (public lectures, community events, etc.) which reach tens of thousands of people annually. Science at Cal activities are designed to meet several goals: (1) Share the results of UC Berkeley’s research and the enthusiasm of our scientists with the public at large; (2) Provide a unified interface to respond to requests from outside groups, build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, and exploit collaborative opportunities with other Bay Area and national actors to improve the public understanding of science (e.g., Bay Area Science Festival); (3) Support outreach activities of centers, departments, faculty, postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students, making outreach efforts easy, efficient, effective, fun and rewarding, thus creating a culture of education and public outreach on campus that is fully integrated in our research and education; and (4) Implement creative ways to strengthen the participation and engagement of underserved communities.

Science at Cal is looking for an Events & Marketing Specialist to join our family. The Events & Marketing Specialist will take the lead in managing events and digital media (social, newsletters, branding, etc.) and help strengthen and create partnerships on and off campus.

This is a one-year, full-time, on and off-site (therefore, must live in the Bay Area) contract position.

The Events & Marketing Specialist reports to the Executive Director of Science at Cal and will work with the Science at Cal Advisory Council and the Lawrence Hall of Science as needed.

  • Events: Working with Science at Cal Executive Director, leads all aspects of event production, from concept development; communicating and engaging with participants and external community members, oversight of event logistics, organization, budgets, cost analysis, marketing strategies, transportation, catering, materials, honorariums, stipends, release waivers for participants (children for research projects), special requirements for participants (cultural, religious, and disability considerations), management of volunteer crew, and onsite presentation. Science at Cal-hosted events include participants of all ages: children, adults and local, national, and international scientific investigators. Planning consultation also includes ensuring events are in compliance with applicable state, federal and U.C. policies and procedures.

  • Network and Partnerships: Builds and expands relationships with educational community partners, initiatives, and programs to develop collaborative projects, ensuring the long-term vitality and sustainability of Science at Cal staffing and programs, by 1. leveraging Science at Cal resources across campus and 2. applying for novel funding sources. Develops and assists with the implementation of new strategies to expand Science at Cal’s science outreach network among undergrads, grads, postdocs, faculty, and staff, serving as a liaison to undergraduate student science clubs and organizations, graduate student associations, postdoc associations, and through channels for reaching out to faculty and staff, such as the Coalition for Education and Outreach (CEO).

  • Communication and Marketing: Leads all marketing, communications, and development of digital and non-digital collateral. Organizes, develops, and manages all of Science at Cal communication tools to support networking of internal science outreach community and engagement of public audiences (schools, community groups, and organizations, general public), including event registration, Science at Cal website, social networking platforms, e-lists, databases, fliers, logos & branding, and preparation and dissemination of e-newsletters to the internal and external Science at Cal communities.

  • Creation, management, and maintenance of Science at Cal databases, including community and campus partners, students, faculty, and programs.

  • Lead all aspects of Science at Cal’s Advisory Council management. Working closely with the Science at Cal Director to organize the selection process, manage internal communication with the Council, reporting, and meeting coordination (determine scheduling, running zoom, creating the agenda, leading activities, writing minutes, etc).

  • Special projects and tasks as needed.
