A Few Sure Ways to Lose Your Money

I will discuss a few games, some involving dice , some involving cards, some even simpler than these ones. The point is to test your intuition.  In most cases it is "obvious" that you should win..... and yet life can be more complicated. 

F. Alberto Grunbaum is a Professor of Math at UC Berkeley. He is interested in a range of applied topics, mainly in the area of medical imaging. He has been involved in work with CAT scanners as well as MRI imaging, two well developed technologies available at many hospitals. He has done work in trying to develop new imaging modalities involving very low energy probes (such as infrared lasers). In these cases (still not available on a commercial scale) the role of probabilistic modeling plays a very important role. There are some (rather hidden) connections between of this work and the subject of the talk.
